18th January 2013

Kids are sick today :(
Finding it hard-pressed to see anything to be thankful for.. but after a period of reflection, i realize there IS indeed something i should be thankful for..

I am thankful for a....

....flexible job

such that I can stay home whenever my kids need me to, without needing to "take MC" or "leave" or even to explain to my boss (and pray that she understands) why I need to be home. Sure it is still incovenient if I have to cancel a session but most people are understanding because hey, they are parents too.

I am also thankful that THUS FAR, at least, the kids still look active and happy, and not too uncomfortable.

Keeping my fingers crossed that they get well very soon! :)

17th January 2013

Today I am thankful for...

.. Nice families to work with !

Worked with a really nice Japanese family today and their Down Syndrome child. It's such a blessed sight to see these parents whose love for their special needs child transcends everything :)

(Yes there was a slight communication problem so thank goodness too for this Japanese phrase book and Google Translate!)

15th January 2013

Today I am Thankful for....

.... My nonsense sons!

They bring me so much joy (and grief, of course... But so far more of the former :D)!

Today's reminder comes from this:

Little Boys are So Weird

They stuck twigs into their shoes and said they are clowns with guns (?) so that they can shoot the bad guys from behind.

So bizarre!

And a typical conversation nowadays:

Boy1: Hey di di, i am a lao ah gong ok?
Boy2: Ok. I am a lao ah ma.
Boy1: But lao ah ma is a girl. You are a boy!
Boy2: (hesitates) OH MY GOD!

??????????????????????????

omg indeed!!

Today I am thankful for....

My beautiful mother

(This was actually taken yesterday, but my processing of these thoughts basically only came today.. When i look at this picture again) :)

In 1998 i thought i might lose my mother to cancer, the same way she lost hers to breast cancer when I was barely a year old.

I am very thankful that modern medical procedures and reverting to healthy eating habits prevented that from happening.

Today she is a proud grandma of 8 not-always-perfect-but-dammit-they-are-lovely grand kids. And in remission for the last 13 yrs.

I am thankful for the way she has given everything and more to us and continues to do so for our kids. I am thankful for her guidance in teaching me to be as good a person as i can be. I am thankful for her acceptance of who i am, what i choose to do, and her relief when she sees i am doing fine.

She isnt perfect because nobody is. But she is still irreplaceable and i love her regardless, just like she loves me despite my many flaws.

:)

10th January 2013

Today I am thankful for...

Not Gambling. And not marrying a gambler! :D

i had a heartfelt conversation with a taxi driver who used to have his own business but lost it all and more to gambling.. He managed to "wake up" when he no longer had things to pawn or sell so that he could gamble it away. He thought about suicide twice, but stopped himself each time when he thought about his family. He describes having gone to hell and back, but still counts himself lucky for waking up. He says "the first day i stopped gambling, and actually worked the whole day in my taxi and earned my money that way, i felt so good knowing i am a normal person again! I knew there was no turning back!"

Mr Koh, i salute you :)

3rd January 2013

A new year, a new resolution. This year, I don't plan to do much (heh heh) except to be nicer, kinder, do more for charity, and to be more patient.

I figured the ONE way to achieve all these things might be to change my mindset from something that more or less (always) borders on the negative about EVERYTHING.... to something.. well. More positive.

I chanced upon this Thankfulness Project idea after working with my awesome boss for the last few months. She suggests this to parents (and the kids, if they are old enough to write journals): to write down something they are thankful for every day. Over time, it WILL change your mind about how your life is. I.e. from self pitying my life sucks to.. hey, maybe it isnt' so bad.

I'm not sure how this will work out for me, but here goes anyway. I've nothing to lose, anyway. Right?

Right.

I hope.

So here goes.

3rd January 2013.

I am Thankful for....

my kids being well enough to go to school, so that I can have some time to myself, and to do some of my work.

Great! :)

What are YOU thankful for? :)
